How Can We Use Lithium Batteries?

With the rapid development of portable products, the consumption of different batteries has increased significantly and many new types of batteries have been developed. In addition to the well-known high-performance alkali batteries, rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries and nickel hydrogen batteries, lithium batteries have also been developed in recent years. The lithium battery has a spiral-wrapped structure and uses a very fine and highly permeable polyethylene foil separator to separate the positive and negative electrodes.

  • What factors influence the lifetime of lithium batteries?

  • What effect does it have on the battery if the lithium battery is fully charged for a longer period of time?

  • How can the safety of lithium batteries be ensured?

What factors influence the lifetime of lithium batteries?

1. Overloading, deep loading and large loading and unloading current

Avoid overloading the lithium battery. Any form of overload of the lithium battery can seriously impair battery power and even explode.

Avoid a depth charge under 2V or 2.5V, as this will damage the lithium battery quickly and permanently. There may be internal metallisation which may cause a short circuit, rendering the battery unusable or uncertain.

Most lithium batteries have an electronic circuit in the battery pack. If the battery voltage is lower than 2,5 V, 4,3 V exceeds during charging or discharge or if the battery current exceeds a predetermined threshold, the electronic circuit disconnects the battery.

Avoid large loading and unloading currents as large currents overload the battery.

2. Too hot or cold environment

The temperature also has a greater influence on the life of lithium batteries. An environment below the freezing point can cause the lithium battery to burn when the electronic product is switched on, and the overheated environment reduces the battery capacity. Thus, if the notebook is used for a longer period without removing the battery from an external power source, the battery will be suspended for a longer period of time from the high heat output of the notebook and will soon be destroyed.

What effect does it have on the battery if the lithium battery is fully charged for a longer period of time?

Too high and too low performance conditions have a detrimental effect on the life of lithium batteries. The number of rechargeable cycles indicated on most of the devices or batteries sold is based on 80% discharge as a comparative test. Experiments show that for some laptop lithium batteries the battery voltage often exceeds the standard voltage by 0,1 Volt, i.e. from 4,1 Volt to 4,2 Volt, then the battery life is halved, and if it is increased by 0,1 Volt, the life span is reduced to the original 1 /3; The more fully charged the battery, the greater the loss of the battery. The long-term condition with little or no power means that the internal resistance of the battery to the movement of electrons increases, thus reducing the battery capacity. lithium batteries are best in medium performance, in this case the battery life is longest.

How can the safety of lithium batteries be ensured?

In order to avoid a low charge or overload of the battery by improper use, a three-fold protection mechanism is provided in the individual lithium battery cell. One is the use of switching elements. If the temperature in the battery increases, your resistance increases. If the temperature is too high, the power supply stops automatically; the other is the selection of the appropriate separator material. When the temperature rises to a certain value, the microprocessors on the separator dissolve automatically so that lithium ions cannot pass and the internal reaction of the lithium battery stops; The third is to adjust a safety valve. At the time that internal pressure of the lithium battery increases to a certain value, the safety valve opens automatically to ensure the safety of the battery.

Sometimes, although the lithium battery itself has safety controls, but for certain reasons the control fails, a safety valve is missing or the gas is released too late by the safety valve, and the internal pressure of the lithium battery will increase sharply and then it will cause an explosion.

Under normal circumstances, the total energy stored by a lithium battery is inversely proportional to its safety. As the battery capacity increases, the battery volume increases, its heat output deteriorates and the likelihood of accidents increases sharply. In the case of lithium batteries for mobile phones, the basic requirement is that the probability of a safety accident should be less than one to one million, which is also the lowest acceptable to the public.

For high-capacity lithium batteries, in particular high-capacity lithium batteries, used in cars, it is particularly important to use a forced heat discharge.
